There are several reasons why your gums could feel irritated or inflamed while brushing your teeth, ranging from lifestyle to bristle type.

Brushing Techniques

As dental experts, we advise brushing twice a day, but for excellent oral hygiene to work, it must be done properly. In order to do this, use a toothbrush with soft nylon bristles and brush your teeth softly in circular strokes rather than back and forth.

Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease)

Gum disease may be indicated by swollen, red, or sensitive gums. Plaque, a clingy, bacterial-filled film, accumulates under and along the gum line and is the primary cause of gum disease. Plaque can result in infections, such as gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, which can progress to gum disease and tooth decay. Gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, an advanced type of gum disease if it is not treated. Periodontitis, as opposed to gingivitis, affects the bones that support your teeth. Periodontitis can destroy the tissues, bones, and gums that support your teeth if left untreated.

Tobacco

Gum disease is more prevalent if you smoke or use “smokeless” goods. Additionally, smokeless tobacco can hurt your mouth more than cigarettes since it is typically chewed between the cheek and the gum. In addition to ulcers on your gums and within your mouth, this might cause your gums to recede. This not only makes brushing difficult but also raises the risk of oral cancer.

Canker Sores

Small lesions called canker sores or aphthous ulcers appear on the soft tissues of your mouth or at the gum line. They can make your gums feel uncomfortable and unpleasant to the touch. Their white core and crimson borders distinguish them. Canker sores don’t require any particular care and go away in a week or two.

Mouth Devices

The gum line may occasionally be pulled or rubbed by braces, retainers, dentures, or mouth guards, resulting in cuts or abrasions that become very unpleasant over time. When inflamed, gums may swell up while being brushed.
