What is TMJ?
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull.
Temporo-Mandibular Joint disorder is a dysfunction of this joint and can be confusing because of the wide range of symptoms that it can exhibit.
Symptoms:
Symptoms can vary from jaw clicking with or without pain, limited opening, a grinding sound, or neck and ear pain or ringing. This pain can be so severe that it can wake sufferers at night and make life miserable.
Often the symptoms will involve more than one of the numerous TMJ components: muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, bones, connective tissue and the teeth.
Treatment:
Because of the complex nature of this joint, there is no ‘quick’ fix, especially as the joint is subjected to conditions that affect other joints in the body, including arthritis, dislocations, trauma and ankylosis.
Ian Ongley has a keen interest in TMJ problems and has managed to help numerous patients over the years. Treatment usually involves an initial consultation, followed by extensive x-rays and models. Frequently referral to and treatment with a Chiropractor is required because of the complex nature of the joint and the disorder.
A splint (a plastic plate that sits over the teeth) may also be required to help stabilize and reposition the joint and muscles.
