Root Canal Treatment

Why might I need Root Canal?

Root Canal Treatments are often preferred by both patients and dentists over tooth extractions, as they allow the natural tooth to remain in place.  Inside every tooth there is a fine nerve structure which may become diseased or inflamed often resulting in toothache.

Signs your tooth may need a root canal include,

  • Constant toothache, with limited relief even when using pain relief
  • Swelling or lump next to the gum
  • Pain when biting down
  • If you have knocked a tooth as you notice it start to change colour and become dark
  • Deep decay that has reached the nerve of the tooth – this may or may not be causing pain yet

We suggest that as soon as you experience any of the above issues, contact us for an appointment.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

A Root Canal Treatment requires typically two to three appointments at our clinic. Here is what you should expect:

  • Local anaesthetic will be used on your tooth to ensure your experience is comfortable and pain-free.
  • To access your nerve your dentist will make a small hole at the top of your tooth and remove the nerve plus any decayed tissue.
  • Very fine files are used to clean and shape the inside of the tooth and the tooth is cleaned with a sterilizing solution
  • In between your appointments, your dentist will fill your tooth with a temporary filling, and medication will be placed into the canals to clear any infection.
  • At the final appointment a permanent filling will be placed in your tooth.

Sometimes due to the complexity of the tooth – a root canal may need be carried out by a specialist, our dentists will let you know if this is the best option for you.
