What is Myofunction?
Soft Tissue Dysfunction can cause poor facial growth, unstable orthodontics and TMJ Disorder.
The influence of myofunctional habits on cranio-facial development and orthodontic problems has regularly been reported in publications. More recent studies show that crowded teeth and jaw discrepancies are not always hereditary, but can be caused by the way a child swallows, breathes, and tongue position. Traditional orthodontic treatment rarely includes therapy for these Myofunctional problems.
Your Dentist or Orthodontist may be the first to recognize that your child has a problem developing. It is beneficial to observe your child’s dental development from the age of 3 years, as if problems are picked up early, this will reduce the likelihood of crowding and or extractions being recommended in the teen years.
It is important to correct bad habits at a very early age (such as those listed below):

- Mouth breathing
- Tongue thrusting
- Swallow immature
- Teeth crowding
- Thumb or finger sucking
- Buck teeth
- Large overbite
- Crooked teeth
- Overactive lips
- Gummy smile
These problems can be treated easily and effectively using the TRAINER System for habit correction during mixed dentition, braces, plates and/or other appliances.
